Cresta

One of Randburg’s myriad suburbs, Cresta lies in the northern region of Johannesburg, closest neighbours being Darrenwood and Windsor East. Cresta is not far from the N1 highway that services the suburbs of Randburg, north of Sandton. Cresta is ideally situated then - the N1 (the major tributary around Johannesburg) is easily accessible and back routes from here to Sandton make cross-city driving relatively easy, depending on the time of day you venture forth. Emmarentia Dam and the Botanical Gardens are in close proximity and offer a major green lung to residents.

They lie just beyond Linden, behind Cresta Centre. Cresta locals can also enjoy the villages of Melville and Greenside (relatively close), as both have an eclectic array of restaurants, shops and novelty boutiques.

Cresta is best known for the Cresta Centre - the sprawling shopping centre on the border of Northcliff and Cresta. The Cresta Centre is not just a large mall; it is one of the biggest shopping centres in the southern hemisphere, having gone through no fewer than eight extensions and refurbishments to accommodate the demands of an ever-expanding northern Johannesburg. Cresta was built in 1977. The first refurbishment finished in 1987 for the tenth anniversary. It was during this refurbishment that the train was added with the outside fun park with castle and pirate ship with water cannons. The transformation to family shopping mall is probably the recipe for its success. In 1990 the second refurbishment was completed bridging the road and adding an ice skating rink. The ice skating rink was subsequently changed into a cinema complex. Over the years, Cresta became a Johannesburg institution, but has since lost some ground to major retail nodes like Fourways and Sandton which are more centrally located.

Randburg has however slowly taken on the mantle of a shopping mecca (other than Sandton) and there are at least four similar mega malls in this part of the city: Brightwater Commons is virtually around the corner, North Gate lies a little further north, and Clear Water Mall further west, along Hendrik Potgieter Drive. Excellent private and public schools, a host of world class hospital and clinics and some of the best shopping destinations on the continent provide all the necessary facilities and essential services for Johannesburg North property owners. Today Cresta has a cosmopolitan population with an interesting mix of nationalities and cultures and residents of the suburb enjoy a vibrant lifestyle in a convenient location close to all amenities.
