Sunninghill is one of the more recent commercial and higher density residential suburbs of Johannesburg. Epic levels of growth have recently occurred within the suburb, with most previously open spaces now occupied by residential complexes or commercial businesses. The suburb of Sunninghill, aside from being really well situated when it comes to getting to the city centre, Sandton or Midrand, is one of few areas in Johannesburg where the residential and commercial sectors co-exist rather successfully.

Witkoppen Road takes one quickly into Fourways and to Monte Casino and beyond, and Lanseria airport is close enough to make weekend getaways possible. But there is a fair amount taking place within the suburb too. The local residents hold family fun days in the Sunninghill gardens park and there is a strong sense of community. Houses in the area are typically modern with decent security checkpoints in many neighborhoods. The newer townhouses and high rises are all well secured and gated communities. 

Sunninghill Hospital is one of the more established hospitals in Johannesburg, under the Netcare brand. Additionally there are many large corporations based in Sunninghill, such as Acer, Eskom, Price Waterhouse Coopers, CA, Inc, Astra Zeneca, RCI and Unysis. Primary shopping centers in Sunninghill include Chilli Lane, with major tenants such as Woolworths, Pick ‘n Pay and Virgin Active Gym. There is the Core, comprising offices (RCI) and restaurants and Suninghill Shopping Center comprising specialty restaurants and high-end grocery stores.
