Buccleuch is one of the older and more established suburbs with tree-lined streets and all the necessary facilities and essential services typical of Johannesburg North property. This residential and commercial node has grown in recent years due to new commercial interests, but still has an air of old Johannesburg charm. Buccleuch is located alongside the Jukskei River, bordered in the East by the Modderfontein River.

Between the two rivers is the older part of Buccleuch, which consists of large agricultural plots in excess of two acres. The Johannesburg suburb has expanded with modern developments in recent years, largely made up of secure townhouse complexes and gated communities.

The suburb has its own on/off ramp to the highway, and at the Buccleuch interchange three highways, the M1, N1 and N3 meet (ideal for business tourists to Sandton). Buccleuch is the undiscovered jewel of Sandton, located midway between the N1, the N3 (from Durban and Johannesburg International Airport). Buccleuch has its own off ramp to the highway, and at the Buccleuch interchange the M1, N1 and N3 highways meet allowing for quick and easy access to the Sandton Central Business District. The Waterfall Estate, nested in a pristine valley is one of the top lifestyle estates in the area and it is right on Buccleuch's door step. In 2006, the Financial Mail referred to Waterfall City as "the biggest property development in South African history". With a development like this right next door, property prices in Buccleuch are expected to increase considerably.

The suburb is within easy driving distance of Johannesburg’s International Airport making it an ideal tourist stop-over suburb. Commercial properties in the Buccleuch are either converted residences or are small high-end A-B grade offices in townhouse complexes – though these are quite rare in a mostly residential suburb. Buccleuch offers a variety of living and real estate options including: start-up one and two bedroom sectional title units, townhouse complexes, secure clusters, large stand alone houses, well priced if buying off plan. Buccleuch has its own convenient shopping mall and alongside the Old Pretoria Road is the Buccleuch Driving Range – all round a popular area for corporates. Buccleuch is located close to the Vodacom World of Golf, the Woodmead Retail Park, which is located within a short distance of the Marlboro Gautrain station. There is a decent selection of schools in the area including Buccleauch high wendywood schools. Commercial interests in Bucchleuch include: computers and communications, manufacturing, professional services, security, wholesale and retail.
